HAFTR Hawks Basketball Team Raises $10,000
in Support of the IDF Soldiers
Friends of the IDF would like to congratulate the HAFTR Hawks and Coach Joey Hoenig on an outstanding game played at the Barclays Center on Sunday, December 28. Over 600 friends, family, and fans from the HAFTR community came out to cheer for the Hawks and show their support for men and women in uniform. This was a winning game both on and off the court, as they triumphed in the game with a final score of 35-32 as well as organized an amazing fundraiser for the brave soldiers of Israel. The team worked hard to sell tickets for the game, and they were able to raise $10,000 to support the wellbeing needs of the IDF soldiers. A big mazal tov and thank you to the entire HAFTR community!
Coach Hoenig recaps this incredible experience:
I'm not sure if HAFTR could've scripted it better.
The HAFTR Hawks varsity basketball team and the Flatbush Falcons arranged to play in the Barclays Center on Sunday, December 28th. HAFTR wanted to use this opportunity not just to have a lifetime memory for the players but to do something greater for the Jewish community. Seizing this opportunity, HAFTR set out to use this game to raise money for the FRIENDS OF THE IDF, an organization of vital importance to Israel and to Jews worldwide.
For every $35 ticket sold, HAFTR would donate $22 to FIDF resulting in over $10,000 raised. The Hawks basketball team members, utilizing athletics for this greater purpose, were responsible to sell these tickets as a prerequisite to playing in this game. The original goal was a modest $5,000 but we exceeded that number after the first 2 weeks of ticket sales. 600 people attended the game to show their support to the Hawks as well as for FIDF.
The game itself didn't disappoint. Flatbush quickly came out with a 9-0 lead before HAFTR finally got on the board with a foul shot late in the first quarter. The Falcons led by as many as 11 in the 2nd and looked as if they were going to run away with this game.
Enter the 2nd half: The Hawks, down by 7, started to play ball. By pressing every Flatbush possession, HAFTR created turnovers and fast break baskets. The momentum changed and the Hawks found themselves up by 1 going in to the 4th quarter. After a seesaw, exciting 4th quarter, HAFTR went up by 3 with 35 seconds to go in the game. The Hawks, with their stifling defense, didn't allow a shot by the Falcons and won this exhilarating game by a final score of 35-32. HAFTR was led by Max Rosner 14 points, Abie Perlow 10 points 16 rebounds and Captain Jon Greenberg 9 points.
While the HAFTR Hawks won the game, both teams were winners and will have memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations to both teams but specifically to the HAFTR Hawks and entire HAFTR community for their wonderful work they did on behalf on the FRIENDS OF THE IDF!!!
