A Letter from the National Director of Friends of the IDF
In 1976, I became an IDF soldier. For 32 years, I wore the famous olive-green uniform with a great sense of pride and purpose. During my service, I met people from many parts of Israel as well as Jews from all over the world. Through them, I learned about what it really means to help one another, to love your country and contribute to its growth, and do your very best so we can all live in peace and prosperity.
As a soldier, you become a part of something greater – the fate of our nation – and you utilize the best of your abilities in order to carry out the mission of protecting it. The soldiers of the IDF are not the only ones involved in this mission. Those who support them and care for their wellbeing ensure that they never stand alone. Our tradition of standing by each other, lending a hand, and working together makes us stronger as years go by.
I have always been proud of being Israel’s soldier, whether in Israel as part of the IDF, or in the United States as the National Director of Friends of the IDF. The bond between the community in America and the soldiers in Israel is extraordinary and powerful – it has changed the lives and created opportunities for thousands of IDF soldiers.
Together, we continue to carry out the utmost important mission of providing for the soldiers who fight relentlessly to defend the Jewish homeland.
On behalf of the IDF soldiers, I thank you for your support and solidarity.
Maj. Gen. (Res.) Yitzhak (Jerry) Gershon
