Young Israel of Oak Park Hosts an FIDF Brunch honoring Israel’s Soldiers

Young Israel of Oak Park partnered with Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, Michigan Chapter Sunday, August 7th for a Brunch to honor the IDF Soldiers. Co-chairs for the event were Sarah and Marty Kornblum, Milt Neuman, and Julie and Eugene Sherizen. Special guest speaker was IDF  (Res.) Combat Soldier Staff Sergeant Matan Shamis. 

Attendees, several whom were former IDF Lone Soldiers or parents of Lone soldiers currently serving, were honored to hear from a current Impact Scholarship recipient, IDF (Res.) Combat Staff Sergeant Matan Shamis, a student shared and sponsored by Teri and Mark Goodman and Enid and Gary Goodman.  Matan, served in the Israeli Navy as a training commander for all infantry soldiers at the Navy training base. He trained over 100 soldiers that eventually served and continue to serve at different navy bases throughout Israel.  In 2008, he participated in Operation Cast Lead in Gaza. Today, Matan is an active reservist studying law at the University of Haifa, thanks to the FIDF Impact Scholarship program and his donors.
